There are many different names for smokeless tobacco, it can get quite confusing. Smokeless tobacco may be referred to as:

-Dipping tobacco, tobacco that is placed between the upper or lower lip and gums. It is also known as spit tobacco or moist snuff. It is often referred to as dip. The use of it is called dipping. Dip is commonly called chew, and because of this, it is confused with chewing tobacco.

-Chewing tobacco, tobacco that is chewed. Chewing tobacco, also known as chaw or chew, refers to a form of smokeless tobacco provided as long strands of whole leaf tobacco and consumed by placing a portion of the tobacco between the gum and cheek and chewing. Unlike dipping tobacco, to release the nicotine and flavor it must be ground mechanically between the teeth. Unwanted juices are then spit out.

-Snuff, a type of tobacco that ground up and then "snuffed" or inhaled through the nose. There are several types of snuff, but traditional snuff is dry or European nasal snuff. In the US, snuff can also be referred to as dipping tobacco, which is applied to the gums, not inhaled.

-Snus, a Swedish product similar to dipping tobacco, made from moist tobacco powder and packaged in a small pouch. Consumed by placing under the top or bottom lip for a period of time. Snus generally is a smokeless, spit-less tobacco. Snus tobacco is steam-cured rather than fire-cured, unfermented, and sugar is never added.

-Creamy snuff, is a fluid tobacco mixture marketed as a dental hygiene aid, but used for recreation. Creamy snuff is a tobacco paste, consisting of tobacco, glycerin, clove oil, spearmint, camphor, and menthol then packaged in a toothpaste tube. It is marketed mainly to women in India, it is marketed as a dentifrice and supposed to be used to clean teeth. A similar product known as gadakju or gul is made with molasses and tobacco powder, used mainly by women in South and Central Asia as a dentifrice.

-Dissolvable tobacco, unlike ordinary chewing tobacco, dissolves in the mouth. This is a new product that many of the major tobacco companies within the US are trying out.
